Welcome to the Digital CrossRhodes — the intersection of Vincent Rhodes' academic, artistic & professional lives.

Currently, Vincent Rhodes serves as Director of Marketing and Communications for Eastern Virginia Medical School — a medical school founded in the early 1970s from a grassroots community effort to attract high-quality physicians to the Hampton Roads area. He also works as a consultant/facilitator with school board members and school district staff across the country and has presented at a variety of national conferences.

Before he joined the EVMS administration, Rhodes served as Communications Manager for Norfolk Public Schools, the largest urban school system in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of the top 150 largest school systems in the country. In that capacity, he directed crisis and strategic communication efforts with the goal of increasing community support for a school system that won the prestigious 2005 Broad Prize for Urban Education and attracted national media attention for its efforts to improve academic achievement for all students. He served on the Superintendent’s Cabinet working with senior-level administrators to develop strategic plans for achieving School Board goals and ensuring efficient day-to-day operations. During that time, Rhodes also worked as Clerk for the Norfolk School Board which won the Council of Urban Boards of Education (NSBA) Annual Award for Urban School Board Excellence in 2006 and was recognized a finalist for that award in 2004 and 2005.

Rhodes started his career with Norfolk Public Schools teaching honors English, journalism, television production and Theory of Knowledge courses to high school students for nearly five years before moving into an administrative position. During his teaching tenure, he coached award-winning debate teams and newspapers staffs and served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers and Advisers.

Prior to becoming an educator, Rhodes served as managing editor of the national scuba diving magazine Sport Diver and as a scuba instructor. His dive travels led him across the globe from the Caribbean to the Central Pacific to the North Pole. His dive experiences include exploration under the Arctic ice, visiting World War II plane and ship wrecks in the Pacific, and visiting underwater caves.

Rhodes has been a freelance graphic designer and feature writer since 1992 and his work has been recognized with a variety of awards from the National School Public Relations Association and the Florida Magazine Association.

He earned a Bachelors degree in Communication with a minor in Biology from James Madison University and a Masters degree in Professional Writing and Rhetoric from Old Dominion University. Rhodes is currently a PhD candidate in New Media and Professional Writing at ODU. His research interests include new media composition, effective digital presentations, and social media (particularly the use of Twitter). He is currently working on his dissertation.

Rhodes is a resident of Norfolk, Virginia.
